Managing a Cutaneous Abscess in the Emergency Department

Description: Cutaneous abscesses are a common type of skin and soft tissue infection observed in the emergency department (ED). Patients typically present with painful, erythematous nodules, which are often indurated and surrounded by an erythematous and edematous border.1,2 The overlying skin may have palpable fluctuance, surrounding cellulitis, and signs of spontaneous drainage.1,2
