The Fatherhood Research Laboratory, State Foundation for Production and Research in Health (Fepps), has conducted nearly 15,000 tests through techniques of DNA analysis in just three years. Every month, on average, 400 reports are sent to the Free Legal Assistance of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, via the Public Defender of the Court of the State. The exam is free for those involved in legal proceedings.

The analysis is performed at the Centre for Scientific and Technological CDCT, administered by the Foundation, the second largest public laboratory of its kind in the country, tests for the investigation of paternity with the latest technology. Apart from Porto Alegre, samples are also collected in eight cities-pole: Alegrete, Caxias do Sul, Ijuí Palm Mission, Passo Fundo, Pelotas, Santa Cruz do Sul and Santa Maria. Quality control is the Group's Spanish and Portuguese-PEG, attached to the International Society for Forensic Genetics.

As the coordinator of the Research Laboratory of Paternity / Fepps, Sabrina Esteves de Matos Almeida, the work is done with the queue at the Court. "After the subpoena, the schedule for collecting samples is immediate," she stresses. In May of next year, the Lab will deliver more for Forensic Genetics Congress in Porto Alegre (RS). The Laboratory develops also the Legal Fatherhood Project, with procedures and routines to harvest in an experimental genetic material in the hearings themselves, in some districts of Porto Alegre in the state.

These tests began in 2007 Fepps, Public Foundation linked to the State Department of Health, representing gain for the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the estimated $ 18 million over five years. For Public Defender General of the State, the investigation of parenthood is to achieve dignity to children who have no health, fostering the concept of responsible parenthood.

Besides CDCT the Fepps also manages the Central Laboratory of Estado-IPB/Lacen, Pharmaceutical Laboratory RS-Lafergs, Toxicológica-CIT/RS Information Centre and Blood Bank of the State of RS-Hemorgs.
