Physical abuse in childhood is associated with elevated rates of heart disease in adulthood, according to results of a study conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada.

"Individuals who reported having been physically abused as children had a 45% greater likelihood of developing heart disease than those who had not been abused," said researcher Esme Fuller-Thomson

The link between childhood abuse and heart disease persisted even after the completion of a behavior control, such as smoking, obesity and physical activity level and other adverse childhood experiences, such as the vices of the parents, income and level of education, diabetes, stress and a history of high blood pressure and mood disorders.

These findings were based on data from a representative community survey conducted in 2005 in two Canadian provinces. Of the 13 000 respondents, 7% indicated that they had suffered physical abuse as a child and 4% reported having been diagnosed with heart disease.

"This finding, if replicated in other studies, suggests that patients known to have suffered childhood abuse should have their cardiovascular risk factors monitored more aggressively than others, since els are most at risk," said co-author, John Frank.

Frank believes that future research is needed to study possible mechanisms through which physical abuse in childhood is associated with heart disease. "Like many previous studies that relate characteristics of the first year of life with serious illnesses later in life, this study does not explain exactly how these relationships work, biologically, more research is needed to understand this process," he concluded.
