The World Health Organization (WHO) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) will join efforts to promote healthy lifestyles, including physical activities, sport for all, the Olympic Games without Tobacco and prevention of childhood obesity.

The two agencies signed the document on Wednesday (21), in Lausanne, Switzerland, where they promise to cooperate, nationally and internationally, to promote activities aimed at helping people reduce the risk of diseases like cancer, heart attacks and diabetes.

The Director-General Margaret Chan, said the agreement will strengthen the fight against diseases that cause the greatest number of deaths in the world.

Noncommunicable diseases or noninfectious kill about 35 million people every year, including nearly nine million are under 60 years.

Lack of exercise is seen as the 4th largest risk factor for all diseases, contributing to about 1.9 million deaths every year.

The International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said that both the IOC and WHO are interested in promoting healthy lifestyles.

A note from the UN agency indicates that almost 90% of all deaths before age 60 occur in poor countries and can be avoided by reducing tobacco consumption, the adoption of healthy diets and increased physical activity. WHO reveals that deaths will rise to 41 million per year if current trends continue.
