C hildren many prefer the taste of less healthy foods, marked by the presence of licensed cartoon characters on packaging, compared with the same food without the characters, according to a new study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, United States.

The study, published in the journal Pediatrics, shows a causal relationship between the licensed characters on food packaging and children's tastes and preferences.

For the study, children aged between four and six years, proved to three pairs of identical foods (cookies, chips and carrots) presented in packages, with or without a popular cartoon character.

The children tasted the food items in each pair and indicate whether the two had the same taste, or if one tasted better. The selected children which foods they preferred to eat.

The results indicated that children were significantly more likely to prefer the taste of food with low nutrient, high energy, such as biscuits and snacks, when a cartoon character appeared on the package. The difference was not significant preference for carrots.

"Our findings provide evidence that licensed characters can influence eating habits and tastes of children in a negative way, by increasing the positive perception of the taste of food is not healthy," writes author Christina Roberto. "Given that 13% of marketing expenditures targeting children is spent on licensing and other forms of promotion of characters, our results suggest that the use of licensed characters on packaging of unhealthy foods should be restricted."
