The general director of UNAIDS, Michel Sidibe, and advisor to the Secretary-General to the Millennium Development Goals, Jeffrey Sachs, visited Sauri in Western Kenya, as part of the Millennium Villages Project.

According to data released by the UN agency, its representatives monitored the progress that has been made in the region on tackling poverty, boosting agricultural productivity, increasing access to health care and education.

Also reportedly, the goal of UNAIDS is to check the efforts to eliminate transmission of HIV from mother to child, and the trip is on the agenda of the five-day official visit to the country.

In September 2009, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV / AIDS and the Millennium Villages Project, signed an agreement to reduce rates of HIV transmission from mothers to children.

Sidibe said that it was verified the possibility of eliminating childhood infections, the virus through tests performed in pregnancy, contraceptive methods and the use of antiretroviral drugs during and after pregnancy.

According to Jeffrey Sachs, the UNAIDS and the Millennium Villages project should develop and implement a system that reduces the transmission of the virus between mothers and children to practically zero, so that methods can be used in other parts of Africa and the world.

Sidibe added that the disease has been the leading cause of death for young children in much of sub-Saharan Africa, where in 2008, 3.9 million children in sub-Saharan Africa the HIV virus through their mothers.
