A diet rich in fructose, the sweetest of the natural sugars, may increase the risk of hypertension. This finding was presented in a paper at the American Society of Nephrology, showing that Americans consume 30% more fructose than they consumed 20 years ago. The main consequence is the increase of obesity in the United States.

The researchers studied 4,528 healthy adults. Fructose consumption was calculated using a dietary questionnaire, quantifying the intake of foods rich in fructose, like fruit juices, soft drinks, breads and pastries. The measurement of blood pressure considered normal among the study participants was around 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

The authors found that people who ate more than 74 grams of fructose per day had 28% higher chance of blood pressure measurements close to 135/85 mmHg. At the same time, they found that there was an increased risk of readings greater than 140/90 mmHg and 160/100 mmHg in 36% and 87% of subjects, respectively.

"These results indicate that intake of fructose in the form of added sugars, is significantly and independently associated with higher levels of blood pressure," concluded the scientists. They said further research should be further processed, with the aim of discovering whether there was a reduction in blood pressure secondary to decreased intake of fructose.
