The World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine produced in China added to its list of prequalified medicines. The new drug will be used throughout the world to protect children against encefalite japonesa. Lower cost than other vaccines used against the disease, the vaccine has Chinese single dose applied in lactating women.

Japanese encephalitis is a public health problem, with seasonal outbreaks in some parts of China, Russian Federation and South Asia. Currently there is no specific treatment for this disease that can be prevented by the use of approved vaccines and treatments in medical facilities to reduce the risk of death or disability.

The Director-General of WHO, Margaret Chan, said the inclusion of the new drug is of great importance to protect children from poor and developing countries.
