Societies can not thrive without clean water in sufficient quantity for all
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, during the Water Conference, which is being held in Budapest, capital of Hungary.

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon warned that water shortages could reach almost half of the global population by 2030.

The statement was made on Tuesday (8) at the opening of the Water Conference, which is being held in Budapest, capital of Hungary.

The UN chief said demand may exceed 40% in water supplies and that authorities need to tackle the unsustainable use of the product.

The United Nations Rapporteur on the Right to Water and Sanitation, Catarina de Albuquerque, said it was important to include the two issues in sustainable development goals that are being debated today.

The Secretary-General of the UN said that water is wasted and misused by all sectors in all countries. So he asked general cooperation for sustainable solutions.

Ban said that a joint effort is needed to ensure a fair share for people and ecosystems.

He talked about the importance of cooperation in three sectors: agriculture, climate change and sanitation.

According to the UN, agriculture is the largest consumer of water and there is need to improve irrigation technologies. This means, according Ban, more weather resistant crops and require less water.

<b> Sanitation </ b>

The Secretary-General also said that sanitation is an important part of the Millennium Development Goals. He said 2.5 billion people have no access to a bathroom in the world. Diarrhoea is the second leading cause of deaths of children under five years, second only to pneumonia.

Ban said that societies can not thrive without clean water and enough for all. Likewise, the UN chief said that people can not thrive without a service sanitation.
