Study evaluated the method on the market more effective against bad breath

A combination of oral hygiene with toothbrush and toothpaste, and also the use of mouthwash is chlorhexidine-based method that leaves your breath better and longer. The observation is made in a study conducted at the College of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto (FORP) USP.

The research, carried out by PhD Jeronimo Neto, reve designed to discover which method available in the Brazilian market is more effective against bad breath in the morning. However, according to Jeronimo Neto, these results can not be extended to those who suffer from persistent bad breath.

The researcher explains that the study tested the use of a sanitizer lingual a toothbrush sanitizer built for two mouthwashes (antiseptic) based chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium chloride and a brush with toothpaste. These different methods of cleaning were analyzed. The differential of the research was to analyze precisely the methods of mechanical removal of biofilm lingual compared with chemical methods of sanitizing against halitosis, because there were no studies with this combined analysis, Jeronimo says Neto.

We selected 20 volunteers of both sexes, aged between 18 and 50, who were asked to stay for 24 hours without any kind of oral hygiene, for the record rates of halitosis. The breath was measured before hygiene immediately after and within three hours. This measurement was made with a device to measure the sulfides, sulfur gases responsible for the odor in the mouth. The time was set at three hours after cleaning, because usually after this period, people are fed, and this interferes with the conditions of the breath.

Test results showed that immediately after the use of the products, only the lingual sanitizers were able to reduce the breath, lasting up to two hours. The mouthwash reduced breath only at the end of the second and third hours, whereas oral hygiene brush and toothpaste was effective in reducing bad breath within the first hour and lasts for up to three hours.

According to the researcher, the method that left the breath better and longer was the combination of oral hygiene with toothbrush and toothpaste, and also the use of mouthwash with chlorhexidine base. We conclude that the mechanical cleaning of the tongue can reduce the breath immediately, but relatively short duration of its effect, while the antiseptic chlorhexidine and oral hygiene can reduce the breath for longer periods. However, the literature shows that chronic bad breath can also be associated with diseases of organs such as the lungs, kidneys or liver, and this requires investigation to detect the compound responsible for the characteristic smell.

Accumulation of dirt

Jeronimo Neto explains that contrary to what many people think bad breath is not always related to stomach problems. Over 90% of cases of halitosis are linked to alterations in the mouth, and this percentage, 60% to accumulation of dirt on the tongue. Therefore, you should make cleaning the tongue and also the use of antiseptic to reach the deepest parts of the tongue.

He reminds the wearer of halitosis has difficulty perceiving the problem, because of olfactory fatigue, ie, the person can not smell it from his own mouth (something very much like the breath of a smoker, you can not realize your breath). Thus, the researcher recommends: The dentist is professional best suited for the detection of bad breath, with the right guidance, the problem can be solved.
