Protocol provides guidance on how the patient with certain diagnosis of cancer should be treated with the indicated drugs, surgery and other forms of points

Sort the care of patients in cancer treatment at the University Hospital of Ribeirão Preto (HCFMRP) through clinical protocols. This was the aim of a group of researchers from the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP), USP, led by Professor Eduardo Magalhães Rego, Department of Internal Medicine Hematology. They counted with the participation of Andres Poveda, the Valencian Institute of Oncology and founder of the Spanish Group for Research on Cancer of the Ovary (GEICO). He spent six weeks in Ribeirão Preto as a visiting professor program's Dean of Research at USP.

According to Professor Rego, based on the experience of the Spanish group, which is one of the largest research groups in the world of clinical oncology, protocols define what is the best treatment strategy than is available within the public hospital. The protocol provides guidance on how the patient with certain diagnosis of cancer should be treated with the indicated drugs, forms of surgery, radiation intensity, among others.

According to Poveda, protocols were developed from international guides. Sort the assistance of all days is a sure way that when a new event arrives, the doctor has already defined the forms of treatment.

<b> Multicentric networks </ b>

The participation of Andres Poveda in systematizing the protocol is only the beginning of a partnership between FMRP and GEICO. The Spanish group has experience in networking multicenter clinical studies, in which various hospitals adopt the same research protocol to improve on results. The proposal is that the School of Medicine to participate in this multicenter network.

Professor Eduardo Rego explains that the research project is still being established and will be on cancer of the cervix, along with Professor Jurandyr Moreira de Andrade, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Although we submit it to the ethics committee of the Faculty. We want to compare the effect of a type of chemotherapy, which we call neoadjuvant. It is used for certain stages of cervical cancer, but these stages are not well established and that is what we want to analyze. Probably, besides the Spanish group, Mexicans centers participate in the study.

Another partnership with Professor Andres Poveda is the exchange of researchers. Next year, residents and graduate students of USP Ribeirão Preto make training in Valencia Institute of Oncology. According to Poveda, the Institute is geared toward medical care and research. He points out that the model adopted in the treatment of patients is different because it is built around a pathology.

The patient is treated by a multidisciplinary team that does not change. When he arrives at the institute he will be serviced by the same physiotherapist, psychologist, radiotherapist, among others. The service is not separate, it is an advantage to the patient, because the team knows and feels confident, and the treatment that is most effective. Every week the team meets to discuss new ideas.
