Exercise is a powerful tool to combat the adverse effects of the Western diet

Team of researchers from East Carolina University, USA, has shown that aerobic exercise improves both erectile dysfunction and the function of blood vessels that supply blood to the heart in animals placed on a high fat diet.

Os resultados foram publicados no American Journal of Physiology: Regulatory, Integrative, and Comparative Physiology.

During 12 weeks, the researchers fed one group of rats with food that reflected the Western diet, high in sugar and almost half of their calories from fat. Another group of rats ingested a standard healthy diet. Half the animals in each group exercised five days a week, running intervals on a treadmill.

At the end of the study, the animals erectile function was assessed by electrical stimulation of the cavernous nerve, which causes an increase in penile blood flow and produces an erection.

The researchers also examined the coronary arteries of mice to see how they responded to agents that would relax them and keep the blood flow to the heart, an indicator of heart health.

The results showed that rats who ate a Western diet, but remained sedentary developed erectile dysfunction and had worse relaxation of coronary arteries.

However, those who ate the diet, but exercised were able to avoid these problems.

Animals that ate healthy food were largely able to avoid both erectile dysfunction as a dysfunction of the coronary artery.

According to the researchers, these results may suggest that exercise is a powerful tool to combat the adverse effects of the Western diet.
