If the law is passed, Uruguayans and foreign residents may purchase up to 40 grams of marijuana per month in pharmacies

The Panel International Narcotics Control Board (Inbc) asked Uruguay to reconsider a bill to legalize marijuana. The proposal, approved by the House of the country late on Wednesday (31) now goes to the Senate.

According to news agencies, the project would support the Uruguayan President José Mujica and provides for the creation of a government body to control the production and distribution of drugs.

If the bill is signed by President, Uruguayans and foreign residents may purchase up to 40 grams of marijuana per month in pharmacies.

According to the UN, the law would go against international treaties on drug control, in particular the Convention on Narcotics, 1961, of which Uruguay is part.

The Inbc says he always tried to maintain a dialogue with the government, including proposing to send a high-level mission to the country, before the bill was voted on. But the Uruguayan government had refused to receive the mission.

The body makes a call to the authorities, ensuring the limitation of the use of narcotics, including cannabis, solely for medical and scientific purposes.

For the panel, if the law is adopted, there could be "serious consequences for the health and well-being of the population and to prevent the use of marijuana among young people."
