The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that Colombia is the first country to eliminate onchocerciasis, a disease known as river blindness.

The Director-General of WHO, Margaret Chan, praised the Colombian government asked the conquest and maintenance of surveillance of the disease, which continues to exist in other Latin American countries.

For the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) the deed of Colombia is an "example of commitment, persistence and integrated work."

According to PAHO, increased efforts are required to eliminate river blindness from other five countries: Brazil, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Venezuela.

The Ministry of Health of Brazil says that the transmission of the disease is restricted to the highest points of the mountain of Parima, Roraima and Amazonas, in areas that would be difficult to access for most people. The focus covers part of Yanomami territory.

Onchocerciasis is the second leading cause of infection that causes blindness, besides producing injuries and skin infections. It is caused by a parasite transmitted to humans by the bite of a mosquito common in areas near rivers.

According to PAHO, Colombia spent 16 years in efforts to eradicate the disease. The last outbreak was observed in the district of Cauca and after drug administration, the interruption of transmission occurred in 2007.

Last year, an international mission visited Colombia and found that the country still had no cases of infection.
