The Government of Rio de Janeiro inaugurated, on Tuesday (30), the OR of the State Institute of Brain Paul Niemeyer, in the city center. The service starts up on Thursday (1), but the first outpatient consultations are being held from June 24.

According to the State Department of Health, the unit, which will exclusively serve patients of the Unified Health System (SUS), is the first center focused on the treatment of brain diseases in Brazil.

The new hospital will hold treating diseases of the central nervous system and peripheral, such as tumors and vascular diseases and degenerative diseases. Counting with four surgical centers and more than 200 beds the health unit will hold eight to ten surgeries per day.

The complex comprising the institute and State Hospital Anchieta, in Cashew account with 44 ICU beds and 56 additional rear (ward) in this first step. According to the government, will be built still another 100 beds in the second phase. The administration of the health unit follows the shared management model for Social Organizations (OSs), in charge of Pro-Health (Association for Social Welfare and Charity Hospital).
