Elderly patients suffering with Alzheimer perform activities that stimulate the brain. New test could diagnose the disease through blood.

Team from the University of Saarland (Germany), claims to be close to discovering a blood test to diagnose Alzheimer's disease.

The trial, which has not gone through clinical trials, biomarkers found, micro RNAs, which can be associated with the disease.

The challenge is to create a way to diagnose Alzheimer's early. Currently, it is only possible to diagnose the disease with expensive tests such as CT or psychological tests. But in general, this diagnosis only happens at later stages.

The study conducted blood tests on 100 Alzheimer's patients and the control group. "We found 12 microRNAs in patients with the disease who were not present in the blood of healthy individuals? Group control. What caught the most attention was that the test precision reached over 90%." Says Cord Stahler, CTO of Siemens Healthcare.

The study took into account also the similarity with other neurological diseases. Using the same biomarkers, we were able to clearly distinguish Alzheimer's disease from schizophrenia or depression. In other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, and mild cognitive impairment assay results were not as accurate. This can be improved, however, refining the molecular signatures, said Stahler.
