Rowing works the pectoral region, contributing to muscle mass and increased aerobic capacity.

The Cancer Institute of the State of São Paulo (Icesp), launched a pioneering project that uses the oar in the rehabilitation of women with cancer.

Patients underwent surgery or chemotherapy sessions may start a training program with rowing exercises, conducted at the Center for Rehabilitation of the Cancer Institute (Icesp), and later, outdoors, in Raia Olympic Rowing at the University of São Paulo ( USP).

Baptized Remama project, the initiative is a partnership with the Icesp Lucy Montoro Rehabilitation Network and the Center of Sports USP.

The Remama aims to promote the practice of regular physical activity even after the period of rehabilitation within the hospital. Rowing is a sport full working all muscles, including the pectoral region, contributing to muscle mass and increased aerobic capacity.

The exercise can bring numerous benefits to cancer patients, to improve physical fitness, self-esteem and mental health. The sport also contributes to the reduction of painful conditions, fatigue, mood disorders and sleep disorders are highly prevalent in this group of patients, says Christina Brito, medical coordinator of the rehabilitation service.

Training at Raia Olympic USP will start in boat school and during classes, participants will prepare to fly other types of individual vessels as canoes and boats from four to eight oars, outdoors.

Breast cancer is the most common type among women worldwide. In Icesp, the disease is responsible for over 25% of total attendances. We are starting a national movement. The idea is to expand the service to other medical clinics Icesp, ie, patients in treatment for other types of tumors, and also take the initiative to other public health units, highlights the expert.
