According to the National Survey of School Health (PeNSE 2012), conducted with students in 9th grade from public and private schools, across the country, Sergipe has one of the lowest incidences of students smoking.

According to the survey, 19.6% of Brazilian students, aged between 13 and 15 years, have tried cigarettes. The highest incidence was found in the South, 28.6%, and lowest in the Northeast, with 14.9%. The study also pointed out that, in state capitals, the frequency of school children have experimented with smoking decreased from 24.2% in 2009 to 22.3% in 2012.

Among students who reported being smokers in the schools of the capital, the highest rate was found in Campo Grande (MS), with 12.4%, followed by Florianópolis (SC), with 9.7%, and the lowest rates were recorded in cities of Salvador (BA), with 3.2%, and Aracaju, with 3.4%.

In Sergipe, the actions of tobacco control are organized by state and municipal administrations to promote and oversee the measures recommended by the Federal Government. Among the actions are performed mobilization campaigns and awareness, ongoing actions in the workplace, at schools and health, and economic and legislative initiatives.

Other measures have also enhanced this reduction, especially among young people, such as limiting tobacco advertising, banning sponsorship of cultural events by industry, inserting images warning about the consequences of the habit in packs and banning the marketing of flavored cigarettes, punctuates the coordinator of the State of Tobacco Control, Livia Angélica da Silva.

PeNSE

The National Survey of School Health is the first initiative that asked directly to teenagers throughout Brazil on risk factors and protection, becoming an important tool to support managers and support public policies in actions to protect adolescent health.

In an innovative way, since its first edition in 2009, the initiative uses technologies that allow the school to respond to an online questionnaire without interference from the interviewer, protecting the privacy and confidentiality of information.
