Surveillance Municipal Health takes action against dengue. Figures show that the index Infestation Land (IIP) average city rose 4.6% in January to 5.8% in April
Presence of Aedes aegypti was found in 77 of the 82 districts sampled, and in only five were not identified mosquito larvae

The Municipal Health Service (SMS) released, on Thursday (6), the result of lifting Quick Index of Aedes aegypti (LIRAa), held 8-16 April from samples collected in all 82 districts Porto Alegre. The figures show that the index Infestation Land (IIP) average city rose 4.6% in January to 5.8% in April, which is considered worrisome because it is the largest IIP average recorded in the city since 2003, when this methodology began to be employed in the capital.

The results indicate an increase in the density of mosquito larvae and identified alarming levels of infestation of Aedes aegypti in Porto Alegre in 2013. The presence of Aedes aegypti was found in 77 of the 82 districts sampled, and in only five were not identified larvae of the mosquito vector of dengue. The sampling LIRAa reached 12,640 properties in the city. The presence of mosquito larvae was identified in 1,112 containers found in 727 properties.

In nine districts infestation levels were calculated over 10%, indicating a high risk condition for the transmission of dengue virus. There is an expansion of the geographical distribution of the mosquito, with high densities in the areas North and South Center, and consolidation in the east of the city. Only the southern tip of the county still had low rates of infestation (confira mapa com a distribuição geográfica do IIP em Porto Alegre).

Maria Mercedes Bendati, the Operational Control of Dengue, highlights the importance of reporting cases of suspected disease. The identification of suspected cases allows to evaluate the risk of transmission according to level of mosquito infestation exists. According to the National Guidelines for Prevention and Control of Dengue Outbreak (2009), the parameters for classification as infestation by Aedes aegypti, are less than 1%, satisfactory, between 1 and 3.9%, alert, and above 3.9%, high risk. In this sense, the IIPS LIRAa also recorded high in several areas of the city (check comparative table with the last survey conducted in January 2013), and the highest, 14.2%, was found in districts in the South, which in the previous survey did not have these levels of infestation. The number obtained also point to a significant increase in the rates of most neighborhoods infested above 1%, expanding the spatial distribution and density of Aedes aegypti in the city
