A project developed by the Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, USP reduces children's exposure to radiation in imaging. The goal of the program is Child Friendly Diagnosis ensure maximum diagnostic accuracy with minimal risks, present or future, for pediatric patients.

The work is based on two main lines: the drastic reduction of the volume of blood collected from patients and children's exposure to ionizing radiation. The new device tomography ICr acquired for £ 1.2 million, conducts exams reducing around 70% children's exposure to radiation. The air conditioner in a room humanized, with the walls painted with pictures of sky and clouds, and a monitor on the ceiling and video projection on the sides with pictures to calm children, as filming of the seabed.

Through the use of micromethods, the Institute of Child reduces by 75% the volume of blood collected for laboratory testing of children. The patients of the institute are often premature babies with small volume of blood, and children with acute and chronic diseases, in which the withdrawal of blood often implies the need of repeated transfusions, among other problems.

The Institute for Children HC performs per month, an average of 550 admissions of patients, and approximately 6,400 outpatient visits. All these children should be helped by the program in their care.

The program Diagnosis Friend of Children advocates a return to clinical medicine, a humanized. It is not fair that such small children facing serious illnesses, are subjected to excessive blood sampling and constant exposure to radiation. The program seeks maximum diagnostic accuracy with minimal exposure of our children to risks and suffering, present and future, says a professor in the Department of Pediatrics of ICr, Magda Carneiro-Sampaio.
