Equipment assesses body fat percentage more accurately

The AllBodyScan 3D scanner body fat gained a new version, lighter and more compact. The equipment measures the percentage of body fat more accurately than the technology on the market, and was released during the SESC Racing Circuit, in San Carlos. On the occasion, scanner evaluated 162 participants.

After scanning the whole body in 30 seconds, the software calculates time and volume, and supplemented with data such as age and sex reported, it takes 30 seconds to render the final result. The scanning is performed by an infra-red sensor, the same used in modern video games, it is set in a tower, while the evaluated remains standing on a turntable. The software captures the volumetric data and creates a three dimensional model of a person. Therefore, it is necessary that this be appropriately dressed as gym clothes, because the volume of garments can influence the measurement. The compact version doAllBodyScan 3D support up to 250 kg, which enables its use in people with morbid obesity. The equipment was developed by researchers at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science (ICMC) at USP in São Carlos.

The teacher of the ICMC, Mario Alexandre Gazziro, project coordinator, says that the changes from the first version were minimal. The major change was the size reduction, consuming now only two square meters, while the other model occupied seven meters. This size reduction was possible because this new approach, we turn the appraised on its own axis, 180 degrees, he explains. In the original version, a post with the sensors is was rotated 270 degrees around the evaluated through a circular track, which made the big rig revealed.

Gazziro, who initiated the research for more than ten years, guarantees the accuracy of the device is identical to the original, because it depends only on the software and sensors, which are still the same. We continue with the goal of 1% margin of error in the assessment of fat, and, as a novelty, this new scanner will also assess muscle mass and bone mass percentage error of 5%, says the researcher. This accuracy comes close to what experts call the gold standard, the most accurate method of measuring body fat by hydrostatic weighing tank in water.

Another calculation that is done with the new version of the equipment is the body weight by measuring the surface. The margin of error is 200 grams for a person of average body type (considering a man with 80 pounds). The software also stores, displays and allows exporting data to other systems.

The scanner will be marketed from the second half of 2013. The orders may be made during the fair Fitness Brazil, which will take place between the 5th and 7th of September in Sao Paulo. According Gazziro the AllBodyScan 3D will cost in the range of 70 thousand dollars, and its use will be facing gyms. This price can still be adjusted because of the industry partners who will carry out production and marketing, says the teacher. Researchers involved teachers, students, funding agencies and university fits a percentage of profit transferred in the form of royalties defined in agreements completed. The system development was supported by clinical experts and researchers in the fields of computing, biomedicine and engineering.
