The researchers conducted studies (in vitro) using a primary culture of hippocampal neurons extracted (region of the brain linked to memory) of rat fetuses. The scientists found that in samples where incubated at AEME and cocaine together, over a period of 48 hours, there was at least 50% more deaths of neurons, compared to samples where cocaine and AEME were incubated separately in primary cultures of neurons. These results indicate that the crack user may be exposed to further neurodegeneration in relation to users of other forms of cocaine use.

This study was conducted during the student's master Raphael Tamborelli Caio Garcia, Effects of neurodegenerative methylecgonidine and cocaine in primary hippocampal cell culture, presented in 2009 under the guidance of Professor Tania.

Currently, Garcia is pursuing a doctorate in the United States where he investigates the effects of AEME in rat brain. The research aims to verify AEME is neurotoxic only or also contributes to addiction to crack, the professor explains.
