Ordinance of the Ministry of Health, published on Wednesday (20) in the Official Gazette, redefines the guidelines for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity as a priority line of care of Network Health Care of People with Chronic Diseases.

The document establishing the Care Line Priority of Overweight and Obesity in the Unified Health System (SUS) was signed yesterday (19) by Minister Alexandre Padilha.

The new line will be defined as care provided guidance and support to change their habits to the strict criteria for bariatric surgery, considered the folder as a last resort for weight loss.

The ordinance provides activities within primary care for the care of overweight and other risk factors associated with overweight and obesity, as well as attending specialized services. Basic health care should offer different types of treatments and follow-ups to the user, including psychological care.

According to the ministry, the overweight person or body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 25 may, for example, be referred to a health polo academy for physical activity and a Center for Health Support Family (NASF) to receive guidance on healthy eating and balanced.

The publication also reduced from 18 to 16 years the minimum age to perform bariatric surgery, in cases where there is risk to the patient. According to the government, the initiative was taken on the basis of studies that indicate the increasing obesity among adolescents.

The maximum age to undergo surgery, which until then was 65 years, has also changed. With the ordinance, the determining factor will no longer age, but clinical assessment (risk-benefit).
