Decision by alcohol consumption was associated with pleasure and fun

Positively or negatively, teenagers are influenced by their families, within their own homes, in relation to alcohol abuse. That's the conclusion of recent research carried out by the nurse Bethany Gomes Ribeiro da Mata in his graduate work submitted to the School of Nursing of Ribeirão Preto (EERP) USP.

The researcher observed and interviewed in their homes, 22 members of ten families, among them, 11 adolescents of both sexes, between 14 and 19 years, who consumed alcohol. The study took place at Unity Family Health EmocyKrause, located in Recife (Pernambuco), between July 2010 and August 2011.

Were targeted in the study only relatives who lived with the teenager and had a closer bond as fathers, brothers, uncles. In each family, the invitation was extended to family members who were present at the first meeting held by the study. And during the research, interaction and speeches indicated the need or not to include other family members, said Bethany, who stuck to themes such as: structure, development and functioning of families; beliefs that may influence alcohol consumption; interactions family members who protect or expose teens to consumption or alcohol abuse, and the meaning of religion.

Most respondents had an income less than minimum wage. Some received government aid and had not completed their studies, and to witness in their own homes, the practice of alcohol. Many teenagers also witnessed separations from their parents or death of any of them due to alcohol consumption. Regarding the relationship with the family, Bethany found that most suffered from misunderstanding, hostility, communication problems, aggression, conflict, violence and lack of interaction.

Pleasure and losses

For the researcher, the decision by the consumption of alcohol was associated with pleasure and fun, especially related to music, which, she said, are in the context of the lives of these teenagers, encouraging consumption. It is an outlet for the difficulties and family problems everyday.

Bethany realized that even with feelings of relief, relaxation, recreation and leisure time, teenagers were aware of the harm of alcohol abuse, mainly because witnessed the problems that caused the drink in their own homes.

Families, although not relate properly with teenagers, its members supported and maintained hope through motivation or religion, thinking about a better future. Religion can foster a sense of hope, and with it, a taste for life, he says. She also noted that teenagers bother to keep alive the motivation for a better life, for the conquest of skilled labor and the house itself, and try to fulfill the dreams that were not possible for their parents.

Bethany found that family influence teens positively and negatively to the use and abuse of alcohol. The structure and composition of the family, the pattern of family interaction, communication between its members, religion and hope are components that are linked directly with the practice of alcohol consumption by adolescents.

The thesis of the family's influence on alcohol consumption in adolescence was guided by Professor Lucilla Castanheira Birth and defended in September 2012, the EERP.
