With 30,112 graduates, or 11.23% of the total number of specialists in the country, pediatrics is the most sought after among Brazilian physicians. To her, join obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery, internal medicine, anesthesiology, occupational medicine and cardiology at the top of this ranking. According to a survey released by the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM), Medical Demography - Volume 2, a total of seven medical specialties concentrate 53% of professionals with titles among the 53 areas recognized in Brazil.

The first four specialties, totaling 37%, belong to the so-called basic areas of medicine. Besides the first classification, also highlight the orthopedics and traumatology, ophthalmology, radiology and diagnostic imaging, psychiatry, dermatology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and intensive care medicine. Thus, the top 15 specialties concentrate 74% of total medical graduates (197,718).

In the opposite position, ten other specialties aggregate 5937 professional, representing 2.21% of the total. Among them, appear: medical genetics, hand surgery, radiation therapy, among others. The last three of these groups count across the country a total of only 908 medical graduates. Radiotherapy has 497 professionals (0.19% of total), hand surgery, other 411 (0.15%), medical genetics and an amount of 200 (0.07%).

Another finding of the study is that younger doctors and women - groups that tend to show consistent growth - have concentrated their choices in basic specialties. The significant presence of these groups in basic areas weakens the argument that the new generations of doctors would be concentrated or looking for training in specialties considered more "profitable", though they may have a higher proportion of applicants per vacancy in proofs of residency.

The study also suggests that the future number of experts may be influenced by the offer of jobs and policies of vacancy Medical Residency in certain specialties. This trend reveals a challenging scenario for the government: they attract professionals to work in the public health system and in regions that are difficult to providing professionals.
