Diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids throughout life may inhibit tumor growth of breast cancer by 30%, according to research from the University of Guelph, Canada.

The study, according to researchers, is the first to provide unequivocal evidence that omega 3 reduces the risk of cancer.

"It is an important discovery. We show that lifelong exposure to omega 3 has a beneficial role in the prevention of disease, in this case, in the prevention of breast cancer," said one of the study's authors David Ma

Ma and his colleagues created a new transgenic mouse that produces as much omega 3 as developing aggressive breast tumors. The team compared these animals with genetically engineered mice only develop the same tumors.

"This model provides a purely genetic approach to investigate the effects of exposure to omega 3 over the life and development of breast cancer," says Ma

The results showed that mice that produce omega 3 developed only two thirds of tumors, and tumors were 30% smaller in comparison with the control mice.

"The difference can be attributed solely to the presence of omega-3 in transgenic mice, which is significant. Whether a nutrient foods have a significant effect on the development and growth of the tumor is remarkable and has considerable implications for cancer prevention breast, "says Ma

The researchers hope that the study will lead to further research on the use of diet to reduce cancer risk and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
