Japanese scientists have created an artificial pancreas of pigs by use of cells from an embryo of the same species.

The research, conducted at the Universities of Tokyo and Meiji, opens doors to a possible future production of human organs in animals.

First, scientists have cloned an embryo of domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) which drew some cells. These were then implanted into another cloned embryo that had been genetically altered to have no pancreas, which was later introduced into the uterus of a female.

The researchers explained that the animal was born with a pancreas that was generated from the implanted cells. The agency worked properly since the animal reported normal levels of sugar and reached adulthood.

The staff expected that this technique can be applied for production of human organs in animals for use in transplants.

Lead researcher, Hiromitsu Nakauchi, told NHK television that his group is technically prepared to continue this kind of experience.

The team is now planning the first general studies by implanting cells induced pluripotent stem (iPS) modified human embryo into a pig, which is inserted into the uterus of a female of the same species.

The iPS can be programmed to develop into any type of tissue. However, Japanese laws prohibit conducting experiments of this nature because of its ethical implications.
