Plant species Croton triqueter presents capacity scavenging free radicals

Plants surveyed by the Institute of Bioscience (IB) with USP extracts have great ability to inhibit tumor cell lines such as lung cancer, breast cancer and leukemia.

The plants, species of the genera Croton and Astraea, very common in Brazil, have potential for use in developing new medicines and have antioxidant and antiproliferative activity.

The study aimed to improve the chemical knowledge and evaluate the potential of six native species of flora: comosa Astraea, Astraea lobata, lundianus Croton, Croton glandulosus, Croton and Croton campestris triqueter. Virtually all Brazilian ecosystems have representatives of the genre, says biologist Daniela Carvalho Ogasawara.

The results showed that extracts of the leaves and stems of all species, especially Croton triqueter showed sequestration capacity of free radicals more effectively leaves. To antiproliferative activity, 11 of the 12 extracts showed activity against the ten cancer cell lines analyzed and none were toxic to the control strain, composed of normal cells, says Daniela.

The cell lines used in this study were from breast cancer, melanoma, glioma, colon, ovary resistant to multiple drugs, lung, prostate, ovarian, leukemia and kidney. The results show high capability of some extracts to combat lung, breast and leukemia.

However, until that turn a drug substance, several additional studies are required. The work focused on extracts and substances responsible for the activities were not isolated. This is a preliminary study to identify whether or not the species have potential for public and private investment, and further investigation, the biologist says, adding that many experiments need to be done to turn that substance a drug, it is difficult predicting the time it will take until the drug is available.
