Key to breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence is to give more power to women and girls

Agencies linked to the United Nations (UN) highlighted the reduction of cases of female genital mutilation by 30% in ten years, Kenya. A study released at the International Day of Zero Tolerance of Female Genital Mutilation, on Wednesday (6) also shows changes in countries where the practice is common, as in Egypt, where about 90% of women have suffered some form of mutilation.

The document was published by the United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). The Goodwill Ambassador of UNFPA, Catarina Furtado, addressed the need to adapt cultural practices similar to the question of individual rights.

"I think we do not grasp the fundamental excuse that female genital mutilation, and other harmful practices, atentórias human rights of girls and women around the world, is a cultural issue," adds Catherine.

In a statement, the executive director of UNICEF, Anthony Lake, said that progress shows that it is possible to end female genital mutilation. But the executive director of UNFPA, Babatunde Osotimehin, said the key to breaking the cycle of discrimination and violence is to give more power to women.
