Since 2007, approximately 23 000 pregnant women in Salvador and in the state of Bahia has been contemplated in the Program for Improvement of Maternal and Neonatal Health, conducted in partnership with governmental and non-governmental, through social and educational activities for pregnant women in vulnerable situations. In the first stage this year, 280 pregnant women participated in the action held in the capital on the first day of this month, the Voluntary Social da Bahia (VSBA).

The program aims to contribute to the reduction of indicators of death for pregnant women and newborns, stimulating and encouraging the attainment of pre-natal as well as strengthen the Pact State Reduction of Maternal and Neonatal Death, signed by Governor Jaques Wagner in 2008.

The 280 pregnant women in the first stage passed by the criteria defined in the program. Community leaders held educational partners, like lectures on breastfeeding, contraception and postpartum care. All pregnant women had prenatal care and the infant received layettes and participated in the raffle giveaways.

"The partnerships made with associations and community foundations have given positive results, contributing to the public policy of the state," said the chief operating officer of the Volunteers, Tania Lessa.
