Team of researchers from the University of Minho in Portugal, created a technology that repels mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.

The approach consists in functional silica nanoparticles that may be added to the clothing during the wash to impart repellent property. Nanoparticles are durable (50 to 100 washes) and ecological.

The project, led by Jaime Rocha Gomes, began in 2007 with the incorporation of active products in silica nanoparticles, such as antimicrobial, aloe vera and recently the mosquito repellent.

"Active products have incorporated into silica nanoparticles that stick or are released in a controlled manner for a particular textile item. Assets These products can be applied by industry in finishing fabrics or knits and also by the user in pieces ever made," explains Gomes.

The product prevents particularly the attacks anopheles mosquitoes that transmit malaria, and kills more than one million people a year. The team is carrying out successful tests at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in London, and will soon move to field trials, hoping to prove the same effectiveness in a real environment. The resistance to washing also being enhanced in the laboratory.

In the future, the team admits incorporate the silica nanoparticles applied in textile products other assets, such as vitamins, enzymes and protections against most diseases.
