Germany announced on Thursday (25), which will contribute ? 1 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. With the budget, health care professionals can continue with efforts to prevent and treat the three highly infectious diseases.

The announcement was made by the German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Dirk Niebel, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Niebel said that "we must continue the hard work and determination to stop HIV, malaria and other infectious diseases." For the minister, the world "is close to turning the tide" and is "witnessing the beginning of the end of AIDS."

By 2016, Germany will donate per year, ? 200 million to the Global Fund. The Fund's executive director, Mark Dybul, considers the compromise a "milestone trembling" that will "make a difference" to health workers in Ethiopia, Haiti, Myanmar and other countries.

The director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria thanked Germany for "generous contribution" and stressed that investment in global health benefits everyone.

According to the Global Fund, the rates of HIV transmission are falling in almost all regions of the world, the deaths from tuberculosis declined by over a third since the 1990s and mosquito nets are being widely distributed to millions of families, for protection against malaria.
