Team of researchers from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, has developed a new tool based on a mathematical model to help the selection of embryos for transfer in fertility treatments.

The model is especially useful for embryo transfer intermediate quality on the second day after fertilization, which provides information on the estimated probability of implanting in the uterus.

The study was published in the journal Mathematical and Computer Modelling.

According to the investigators to assess the quality of embryos only two variables are examined morphological: cell number and degree of the embryo, which includes the fragmentation of symmetry and the same cells.

The best cell embryos are those with symmetrical fragmentation below 10%, being the most likely to result in pregnancy. "However, in the process of fertilization embryos are not always obtained with these characteristics. Our model would help embryologists to select embryos that do not meet these requirements may also result in a pregnancy," the authors say.

The researchers explain that although there are other tools to aid the selection of embryos before transfer, its predictive ability is inferior to this model of embryo implantation.

According to the authors, the model, thanks to the statistical techniques used, is faster, more efficient and accurate than those proposed previously used, allowing better selection of embryos with the greatest chance of implanting in the womb.
