Disease can lead to detachment of this part of the eye and even loss of vision

Six indirect ophthalmoscopes and a diode laser, equipment useful in the diagnosis and treatment of retinopathy were provided through an agreement to units of state public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The equipment, essential for diagnosis of disease in prematurity (ROP) were provided through a partnership between the Health Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (RJ-SES), Children's Institute Cataract and IFF for implementation of the Program for Prevention of Blindness in ROP status.

The disease, which affects the premature baby, whose retina is not fully vascularized and ready to get in contact with the external environment, can lead to detachment of this part of the eye and even loss of vision.

In developing countries, ROP is considered as an important cause of childhood blindness. The disease, which affects the premature baby, whose retina is not fully vascularized and ready to get in contact with the external environment, can lead to detachment of this part of the eye and even loss of vision. Therefore, early diagnosis is so important and can be done in the newborn through tests suitable for the occurrence of the disease in each neonatal intensive care unit. In general, it is recommended that all premature baby up to 32 weeks of gestation or birth weight that has less than 1.5 Kg be examined by an ophthalmologist trained with proper equipment even in the first weeks of life. Only in Brazil, the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness estimates that 33,000 children are blind from eye diseases that could have been prevented or treated early and at least 100,000 are visually impaired as a result of them.
