The Bulletin PAD 2011 - Healthy lifestyle habits, launched on Wednesday (12), the Center for Statistics and Information Pinheiro Foundation, reveals a new and important crop conditions and health habits of the mining population, which will help subsidize state agencies for planning political awareness in this segment.

Based on the results of the second edition of the Survey by Household Sampling of Minas Gerais (MG-PAD), held in 2011, the study found, in an unprecedented manner in the country, the chronic diseases that affect the mining population and examined risk behaviors, as alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which also contribute to worsening of these conditions and recurrent. We also investigated habits like physical activity, preventive examinations and healthy eating.

The studies were done on a regional basis, so that we can support the development of public policies with specific focus on the needs of each region of the state.

The survey found that in 2011, 68.3% of the population above 14 years mining was in the habit of regularly consuming fruits and vegetables, while 54.1% were removing visible fat from meat before consumption. In the opposite of a healthy lifestyle, only 13.9% of the population physical activity performed adequately in their spare time, 25% drank alcohol regularly and 13.5% were smokers in Minas Gerais last year.

<b> Most are free of chronic diseases </ b>

Considering the presence of chronic diseases, the study found that the vast majority of the population of Minas Gerais above 14 years (66.1%) were free of diseases investigated.

As in Brazil, Minas Gerais has been undergoing profound demographic, epidemiological, economic and cultural. The proportion of elderly in the population has increased and, in addition, people changed their lifestyle too. Increasingly chronic diseases increase its stake in mortality and morbidity of the population. Among the 5.3 million people suffering from chronic diseases, hypertension prevailed, reaching 19.7% of the miners, followed by diseases of the spine (12.4%), heart disease (5.6%), depression (5.5%), arthritis or rheumatism (5.2%), bronchitis or asthma (3.9%), renal failure (2.2%) and, to a lesser extent, cancer (0.7%) and tuberculosis (0.2%).

As expected, the prevalence of these disorders varies with age, reaching more often in people older ages. In the case of hypertension, for example, the prevalence was 58.3% among the elderly.

The occurrence of these diseases also varies in relation to gender. With the exception of tuberculosis, chronic diseases investigated reach more female population. The biggest differences between men and women were observed for hypertension (16.4% vs. 22.8%), depression (3.0% vs. 7.8%) and arthritis or rheumatism (3.3% against 7.0% ).
