Researchers at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) developed a small digital device capable of reducing the risks and side effects of regional anesthesia, widely used in small and medium limb surgeries.

The nerve stimulator, as is known, is controlled by a microprocessor and connected to a needle. The machine beeps, indicating to the physician the exact location to be anesthetized.

In surgeries for members when it makes use of the technique regional anesthetic is injected near the set of nerves, inhibiting the pain stimulus. The imprecision in these cases can take from drilling nerve in extreme conditions, even the tingling sensations and partial paralysis due to high amounts of anesthetics.

The prototype, still in the testing phase, was created by an electrical engineer Carlos Alexandre Ferri as part of a master's dissertation defended by the graduate program of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FEEC) Unicamp.

Other equipment <b> </ b>

According to researcher Unicamp, Carlos Alexandre Ferri, there are commercial appliances nerve stimulation for assistance in regional anesthesia. As the proposed equipment, they are used alternatively to the traditional method, the location of which nerve is performed manually by touch.

The difference between them is that for the first time, the system was created fully automatically. This allows, according to the engineer, which equipment has a ten times higher precision compared to conventional ones. Moreover, the practicality obtained with automation is essential for the anesthesiologist notes.

<b> Cost Reduction </ b>

Another advantage is the cost savings. While the values of existing devices, usually imported, come to about $ 4000, the cost of mounting the instrument was created on the order of $ 300.00. The differences are also significant in relation to the cost of operation, says the scholar Unicamp.

He explains that the use of commercial devices requires an assistant next to the anesthesiologist to make adjustments while the nerve is located. Being automatic, the equipment developed at Unicamp dispense this kind of support. At this point, the supervisor of the work completed there are other ways of identifying the set of nerves, but also financially unviable.

One can use, for example, ultrasound imaging equipment for displaying the set of nerves. But besides labor, would require a machine of this size dedicated to that end, causing a very high cost. The ultrasound equipment must be used for clinical diagnosis. In these cases their use will be much more beneficial to the patient, adds Antonio Quevedo, Department of Biomedical Engineering FEEC.

Tests <b> </ b>

The anesthesiologist Francisco Pena Carlos Siqueira clinical tests made with the stimulator. The experiments took place at Hospital Mother Theodora, located in University Park in Campinas. All tests were performed with patients in hand surgery using the technique of brachial plexus blockade.

The Ethics Committee of Medical Research, Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at UNICAMP approved trials, promising, as shown in the engineer Carlos Alexandre Ferri. After testing, Dr. Francis reported that the blocking pen using the stimulator was performed with better quality compared to the conventional method, without the use of the apparatus. This means that the desired effect was obtained in a shorter period of time.

Patent <b> </ b>

Quevedo also evaluates how promising the potential of the research that resulted in the stimulator. It is critical to transfer this technology to industry. Immediately, the machine shows already created solutions that can improve commercial aircraft, considered.

This type of technique is important for the quality of the application regional anesthetic, largely used, but it poses risks of complications still be inaccurate. With these mechanisms, location, gain quality health service is great. And at a low cost analyzes. He also said that the patent application is already being systematized by the Inova Unicamp Innovation Agency.

<b> International Award </ b>

The originality and application of research to solve a real medical problem earned the scholar of the international prize at Unicamp sponsored contest Freecale. The announcement of the contest came at the end of October this year. The proposal was to employ technology developed by the manufacturer of sensors and microprocessors.
