The number of elderly Brazilian population increased from 15.5 million in 2001 to 23.5 million in 2011, according to research Synthesis of Social Indicators: An Analysis of the Living Conditions of the Brazilian Population 2012, released today (28) by Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). People aged 60 years or more now account for 24.5% of the population.

According to the IBGE researcher Cynthia Simões Augustine, most of the elderly are women (55.7%) and is in the urban area (84.1%).

Usually they are considered the reference person in the household, 32% have neither a year of study, almost 60% are retired, 49% had income from all sources, up to a minimum wage, 24.5% are inserted in households with incomes of up to one minimum wage per capita, which is a fairly high value in the case of Brazil, the researcher.

The data also show that only 4.6% of the elderly are at the lowest level of income. The condition that indicates a better income, on average, especially when compared to the group of young people, says the researcher. Moreover, it has grown the number of people over 60 who live alone. Households where only one person lives, 42.3% are occupied by seniors.
