Pernambuco registers high incidence of tuberculosis in the prison population

Of the 4300 new cases of tuberculosis occurring on average per year in Pernambuco, 350 are detected in reeducandos in 20 prisons. The number corresponds to approximately 10% of the total cases. Third in rate of disease and mortality in second place in the country, being the 1st in the Northeast, the state began this week, a move to educate community health workers in combating the disease.

The figures show that the incidence is high in the prison population. The performance focused in public and who maintains that contact becomes permanent and fundamental priority for disease control state prisons. Therefore, the concern in this flow monitor, punctuates the Tuberculosis Program Coordinator of the State Department of Health (SES), Laize Brilliant. Throughout the month, the SES promotes media campaign with the movement of parts and outbus, and support municipalities in educational activities.

The prison system in the state of Pernambuco houses currently about 25 thousand prisoners.

Tuberculosis is a serious disease, but curable in virtually 100% of new cases, since the principles of treatment are followed. It is a priority health problem in Brazil, which along with 21 other developing countries, home to 80% of cases of the disease worldwide. Curable and preventable disease, tuberculosis kills approximately 4,500 people in Brazil each year. In most cases, the deaths occur in metropolitan areas and in hospitals. In Pernambuco occur, on average, 380 deaths per year (according to data from the Mortality Information System / SIM).
