The Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Engineering (Coppe / UFRJ) inaugurated the country's first plant capable of scaling technologies for the production of polymeric micro-and nanoparticles, with applications in the medical, pharmaceutical and biotech.

The first product to be produced is a polymer that stores the Praziquantel, a drug used in the treatment of schistosomiasis, a disease that affects 200 million people worldwide and 8 million in Brazil, where children are the main victims. This project is being developed through a partnership with the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz / MS).

According to Professor José Carlos Pinto, coordinator of the Engineering Laboratory of Polymerization Coppe, the encapsulated Praziquantel has advantages over traditional remedies: enables better use of the drug, reducing the loss in the gastrointestinal system, and facilitates their ingestion, especially by children, who often reject the bitter taste of the drug, impairing efficacy. South America and Africa are the regions with the highest number of cases.

The Pilot Plant will also enable production of advanced sunscreens, which even today are not marketed because they can not be applied directly to the skin. In this case, polymer nanoparticles act as a kind of film which entraps the encapsulated sunscreen, providing protection to sunlight without damaging the organism.

Furthermore, researchers Coppe will produce on an industrial scale polymer microparticles developed in the laboratory for use in treating cancer, using the technique of embolization. The technology, which has had its patent filed, has been successfully tested.
