Hospital Center for Rehabilitation Ana Moura Xavier Carolina will offer an alternative therapy to their patients: botulinum toxin.
The service was launched this week with the forecast for completion of 15 applications of botulinum toxin.
30 procedures are expected to be made in monthly unit in Curitiba.

Starting this week, the Center Hospital Rehabilitation Carolina Ana Moura Xavier, located in Curitiba (PR), now offers a new therapeutic alternative to their patients: botulinum toxin. The substance reduces the stiffness and increases the functional capacity of patients.

The expectation is that 30 procedures are done monthly at the hospital. Today, eight professionals are qualified to perform the procedure.

In this first stage will be served patients with sequelae due to brain injuries, stroke (cerebrovascular accident), TBI (traumatic brain injury), spinal cord injuries and cerebral palsy.

The botulinum toxin promotes muscle relaxation, facilitating stretching, preventing deformities and promoting functional benefits to patients when combined with a comprehensive program of rehabilitation, explained the physiatrist Vitor Telles.

Unlike other drugs used orally, which act systemically throughout the body, application of botulinum toxin has localized character, which decreases the risk of adverse effects. Another benefit is the response of children to treatment. They are still developing their capacity for brain plasticity and therefore respond better to botulinum toxin orthopedic doctor told child, Ana Carolina Pauleto.

Previously, those who had indication for treatment with the toxin performed the procedure at the Hospital of UFPR or the Little Prince Hospital, both in Curitiba. The main problem is that the patient could not be routed directly to the CHR of these reference units. The whole process had to be started again at a basic health unit emphasized the director of the Center Rehabilitation Hospital, Antonio Paulo Mallmann.
