Press conference in the boardroom of the Ministry of Health to announce the surgical mandibular reconstruction with bioprosthetic derived from castor oil.

The first surgery of mandibular reconstruction with bioprosthetic derived from castor oil from northern Brazil were initiated, on Wednesday (3), in Tocantins. The procedures will be performed unpublished until next Sunday (7) in seven patients at the Hospital General Public Palmas (HGPP) by Regulation Center of the State Health Department, six Tocantins and Pará The surgeries will be performed by team Facial Reconstruction HGPP.

The patients, aged between 18 and 87 years, were suffering from a disease called ameloblastoma, a tumor that grows inside the jaws, which although benign, has aggressive behavior, developing rapidly and thereby undermining such structures. Treatment consists of removal of part of the mandible and reconstruction with bioprosthetic castor oil polymer. Due to the loss of part of the lower jaw, without the prosthesis, patients would be maimed, disabled in feeding, speech, aesthetics, affecting social life.

<b> Dentures </ b>

To accomplish the manufacture of dentures, it is necessary initially a prototype, a three-dimensional model of the patient's face. The prototype is made by printing objects originated tomographic imaging, magnetic resonance and ultrasound. The impression structures of the human body is given the name biomodel. The images of the face and skull are handled by specific computer programs and structures or absent and are affected by pathology you draw and replaced by virtual mirror, and thus the biomodel is made (printed). The model obtained, is not transferable and only the individual in treatment, and biomaterials in facial prosthesis is made. The making of biomodels for the seven patients was made by Renato Archer Research Center (Cenpra), an agency of the Ministry of Science and Technology, in Campinas.

From the biomodels, surgical planning was established and guidelines for the design of prostheses were handed over to Prof. Dr. Jonas de Carvalho, Department of Mechanical Engineering at USP in São Carlos, who headed the Poliquil Polymers, to make final.

Both the drawing and the making of the prostheses were donated by partners. Each prosthesis has an estimated cost of $ 150 thousand, which totals costs about $ 1 million for the seven cases.

The novelty <b> </ b>

The polymer derived from castor oil can be treated as a kind of plastic vegetable, ideal to anyone who needs a bone implant. The substance was developed by Prof. Dr. Gilberto Chierice, the Department of Chemistry at USP in São Carlos. The research began in 1987 when Chierice coordinated a team to develop, at the request of Telebras, a resin to seal overhead and underground telephone cables. The experiment was continued and culminated in use for medicine. According to the researcher, the castor bean polymer prosthesis offers more resistance, flexibility, lightness and stability.

<b> Assessment </ b>

According to the surgeon bucomaxilofacil Daniela Carvalho, who coordinates the team's facial reconstruction HGPP, responsible for operations, the risk of rejection of the prosthesis is minimal. The major difference is the prosthesis be made of a material with chemical-physical characteristics similar to the human bone. The recovery of the functions of chewing, speech and aesthetics are recovered in 90%, he said.

As estimates of the surgical team, if the procedure were performed in private health, each face reconstruction surgery would cost around £ 230,000, plus the costs of hospitalization. In addition, patients need care with physical therapists, speech therapists, nutritionists, psychologists will be offered free at HGPP he said.

<b> Research Center </ b>

In addition to performing for the first time in the North this type of surgical procedure, Tocantins was included as the second Research Center of Advanced Polymer Poliquil on castor oil polymer prostheses.
