Data from the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplantation show that only the first half of 2009 were carried out in the country, 14,741 tissue transplants. In the same period, in 2012, that number rose to 19,266.

According to the Ministry of Health, specifically the cases of burns have played a significant harm to public health. In 2011, there were 1437 admissions to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Burnley and the death rate was nearly 18% (258) of admissions. In total, the country has 45 hospitals qualified for assistance to victims of burns, spread across the five regions.

Only HC University of São Paulo are provided about 530 visits per month burned from different Brazilian regions. A total of 6300 calls made annually. Of these cases, many urgent need of transplants that are enabled by preservation techniques developed there.

The flagship is the skin, explains plastic surgeon Andre Paggiaro. The HC bench of tissue donated prepares the skin for it to be transplanted sooner. Generally, applications arise on an emergency requires up quickly especially for burn victims. As reported by the physician, the goal of treatment in these cases is to remove the necrotic tissue and replace it with a new tissue and transplantation is the primary option for patients who have had great part of the body burned.

The submission process of the skin starts from a formal request. Will the Central as the skin will be needed to treat a particular patient. Through the intermediation of the National Transplant System, the bank forwards the material to the site that requested it. All shipping is the responsibility of the National Transplant System and its agreements with airlines.

To Paggiaro, the diversity of stored tissues and its multitude of applications, the Bank of HC can be considered a benchmark in the country. Currently, the unit consists of a team of six doctors pickups, a nurse, a biomedical, a nursing technician and a secretary.

Donors who help make up the contents of the Bank are the same who donate kidneys, liver, lungs, all deceased donors. The withdrawal of the tissue is made as a traditional surgery and causes no deformation. It is performed in areas that are not exposed, as the posterior thighs and back.

Despite the simplicity of the process, there are few Brazilians registered as donors of skin. For the plastic surgeon, there is an ongoing concern in increasing the number of donors to more and more patients in need of transplants and treatment can be met.
