Unicamp study revealed that campaigns for early detection of oral cancer is key to prevention of evil, responsible for high rates of morbidity and mortality in the country. Estimates indicate that Brazil is one of the countries with the highest incidence of oral cancer in the world, which is the sixth most prevalent tumor type in the country. According to the author of the research, the dental surgeon José Ribamar Sabino, despite scientific advances, there was no improvement in survival of these patients. Failure to make the diagnosis in the early stages is the main factor that limits the treatment and therefore prognosis highlights.

Sabino compared the campaign conducted by the Ministry of Health, called the Campaign for Prevention and Early Detection of Oral Cancer developed in conjunction with the National Immunization against influenza with a program developed by the FOP titled Searching Turns Injury Mouth, Malignant and Potentially Malignant Lesions of Oral Cavity. Although the FOP program has been more effective in detecting oral cancer, both campaigns showed significant results for the diagnosis of numerous benign lesions, both of which contributed to the promotion of oral health in the region.

The researcher evaluated the medical records of a period of ten years (2001-2010) of patients who were referred to the FOP Orocentro, a specialized diagnosis and treatment of oral lesions. The patients had lesions detected in the campaigns of prevention and detection of oral cancer Ministry of Health, held in Piracicaba and cities. The medical records of patients seen by the FOP project developed by a two-year period (2009-2011) were also analyzed.

The number of patients with a confirmed diagnosis of malignant lesions was higher in the Search Active campaign, in which patients with higher risk of developing oral cancer were recruited for examination. But it is important to note that both strategies were able to diagnose numerous other injuries, especially traumatic injuries related to the use of prostheses, reveals.

Joseph Sabino remember that oral cancer occurs more often in men, mostly over 40 years old. The smoke, combined with excess alcohol are the main risk factors. Most commonly affects the tongue and mouth floor. Cancer of the lower lip is considered separately and sun exposure is the main cause. In this sense, the World Health Organization recognizes that prevention and early detection are key objectives to improve the control of oral cancer. Thus, early diagnosis and proper treatment are key to reducing mortality from the disease.
