Scientists at the Institute of Psychology (IP), University of São Paulo (USP) developed a postural assessment software that helps nurses and physiotherapists to traçarem diagnoses and solve physical problems. Called Postural Assessment Laboratory of Biophysics (ApLoB), the program is open source and free, and can be improved or serve as a basis for other programs in the genre.

The ApLoB is able to accurately measure sizes and angles. For this, a picture is placed on it and software, from a scale, makes the measurement of various parts of the anatomy of the person. The size of a bone relative to another may indicate a problem posture, as well as the angle of curvature of the neck, for example in relation to the shoulders, could show a defect in the column. The diagnosis is made by health professionals, but the software helps to give more accurate results to assist you.

However, according to the researcher, the program has all the features of Toad (Software Postural Assessment) which can perform more measurements and cross, automatically, the data in several tables, which help further the work of the physiotherapist or nurse.

The software developed at USP was designed by engineer Carlos Lopez Noriega, in his research on the graduate program in Neuroscience and Behavior (NeC) of IP. He says the inspiration for the program came from Sapo, developed by Professor Marco Duarte, advisor of Noriega in the study. This is one of the most advanced in the industry, assesses the engineer. However, the Frog was created by an unusual method and the Java programming language, which is not normally used by the scientific community. So he makes any process that can develop it further or even use it as the basis of education or developing similar software.

The goal of Noriega in his dissertation entitled Development of a computer program for evaluating postural open source and free, was to create a program with functions similar to Toad, using the procedures established in the scientific community. The ApLoB was done with the Python programming language, commonly used in academia, and by a method that allows all steps to be mapped. The software can be downloaded for free.

I used a programming language closer to the scientific community. They can improve the software, or use the steps to create a new, says the researcher. Similar programs in the same area or in different industries can use the same steps in the creation, since the code, tools and development processes are open to all.
