"Manual of Healthy School Canteens: promoting healthy eating", which aims to encourage private schools to offer lower-calorie snacks to students.

The "Manual das Cantinas Escolares Saudáveis: promovendo a alimentação saudável" was launched by the Ministry of Health this week. The initiative is part of the technical cooperation agreement signed between the body of the folder and the National Federation of Private Schools (FENEP), which has nearly 18 thousand associated schools. The goal is to encourage private schools to offer snacks with fewer calories and higher nutritional value to students and help reduce the incidence of childhood obesity.

The manual provides guidance to various educational institutions, such as replacing fried foods and baked by industrialized options for more natural and free of preservatives.

The Health Minister Alexandre Padilha, which highlights the many eating habits begin to be formed in childhood and that the school environment plays a key role in this process. Provide a supportive environment for healthy food choices to children helps prevent childhood obesity. The minister also reinforces that the initiative will have a positive impact in the near future. Children with healthy habits tend to become healthy adults, concluded the minister.

<b> Overweight in schools </ b>

According to the Household Budget Survey of 2009 (POF) conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 34.8% of children aged between 5 and 9 years old are overweight recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health

Already in the range of 10 to 19 years, 21.7% of Brazilians are overweight - in 1970, this ratio was 3.7%. In this group, the body mass index (BMI) - the ratio between the weight and the square of height - should be between 13 and 17. Maintaining proper weight since childhood is a major factor for the prevention of diseases in adulthood.

Bad eating habits of Brazilian students can also be observed in the results of the National Survey of School Health (PENSE/2009). The evaluation indicated that only a third of students enrolled in primary private network consumes fruits and vegetables five or more days a week. Have soft drinks and fried food are routine 40% of students.

The bad habits of childhood may reflect in adulthood. In the last six years, Brazil has increased the percentage of overweight people. According to Vigitel, the proportion of overweight adults increased from 43% in 2006 to 49% in 2011. In the same period, the percentage of obese increased from 11.4% to 15.8%.

Importante esta iniciativa do ministerio da saúde trabalhar com prevenção é bem melhor que tratar crianças e futuros adultos com doenças causadas pela obesidade.
