Survey of patients assisted in the service of Ophthalmology, Hospital de Clinicas (HC), State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in São Paulo, shows that age, family history, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia (changes in blood levels of cholesterol and / or triglycerides) and physical inactivity are the main risk factors for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - a leading cause of blindness in the developed world, affecting individuals over 65 years. Individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease had an increased risk in developing the advanced form of AMD

The study found that over 70% of those affected had the advanced form of the disease and 52 of them had low vision (19%) and blindness (33%). In this group, type of food, use of antioxidants, alcoholism, smoking and sun exposure were not significantly associated with the development or form of AMD.

According to her research, Dr. Priscilla Hyun Hae Rim, Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) Unicamp, cardiovascular disease and AMD as advanced apparently have several risk factors in common and could be prevented through joint programs promoting the health of the elderly, involving combat factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity (high BMI), smoking, drinking and poor eating habits, although these factors alone were not statistically significant in the study.

The cross-sectional study involved 236 participants over 50 years, including 141 affected by evil and 96 controls, all of which underwent complete ophthalmic examination including fundoscopy, angiography and angiography. Participants were also submitted a questionnaire to the mapping of demographic factors, medical history and ocular family history of AMD, lifestyle, smoking habits and alcohol consumption. The result of the thesis work and study were advised by Professor Antonia Paula Marques de Faria and coorientados by Professor Luis Alberto Magna, medical faculty of the FCM.
