On Friday and Saturday (17:18) More than 100 doctors serving people with HIV and AIDS gather in Sao Paulo on the occasion of the First Workshop Comorbidities and Adverse Events. The goal, according to event coordinator, Gisele Cristina Gosuen, is to have several specialists split their expertise and, together, to discuss ways to improve care for patients with AIDS and, consequently, the quality of their lives.

The first day of discussions, according to the coordinator, was devoted to the theoretical field. Tomorrow, will be presented clinical case studies.

Comorbidities and adverse events were chosen to be discussed at the meeting are: senility, aging with HIV, neurocognitive abnormalities, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, cardiometabolic risk, lipodystrophy, renal diseases, bone disorders and cancer.

Gisele, who attends the outpatient clinic of the Center for Reference and Training in STD / AIDS of the Ministry of Health of São Paulo, explains that these problems can occur due to the prolonged use of antiretroviral drugs, the very manifestation of the virus in the body, and the genetic predispositions of patients.

Over the 30 years of knowledge of AIDS in the world, the challenges of doctors to attend patients with HIV were changing. At first they had to deal with the rapid death of these patients. Today, with the advent of antiretroviral cocktail, the challenge is to take care of diseases related to life with HIV and AIDS and the adverse effects of prolonged use of drugs.
