Study released on Wednesday (1) Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) shows that 1.5 million Brazilians, among adults and adolescents use marijuana daily.

The 2nd National Survey on Alcohol and Drugs (Lenad) also shows that 7% of the adult population has tried drugs at some stage of life, the equivalent of eight million people, with more than one third of adult users (37%) is dependent, which represents 1.3 million people. Among adolescents, 600 000 have already had contact with marijuana, 4% of the total, and 10% are dependent.

For the survey, 4,607 people were interviewed in 149 municipalities, aged from 14 years. Unlike the first survey, in 2006, respondents in the current survey answered a confidential questionnaire about drug use.

For the research coordinator, psychiatrist Ronaldo Naranjo, a worrying statistic is the ratio between adult and adolescent users. In 2006, there was a teenager for each adult marijuana user. In 2012, the proportion increased to 1.4 per adult teen. In 62% of cases, users used the drug for the first time before age 18.

"If the laws become more lax in the use of marijuana, the worst off will be the teenager. What will be the impact in relation to mental health of adolescents? That's what the data alert us. A person who already is not user will change the consumption pattern. Who can change the pattern of consumption, according to our legislative action, is the teenager, "he says.

Respondents also were asked about legalizing marijuana in the country. The majority (75%) is contrary, compared to 11% favorable. The data gathered will enable the Lenad subsequently evaluating the use of other drugs, like crack.
