Inexperienced players of violent video games combine moral purity and hygiene

Study with 76 participants found the so-called "Macbeth effect" on those who had no intimacy with violent games

Research of the University of Luxembourg, found that inexperienced players video game after playing a violent way, tend to feel anxious and, when requested, to choose care products such as toothpaste, liquid soap and deodorant as a gift, combining the powerful scenes dirt.

According to researchers, these findings linking cleanliness and morality in violent games. The study examined 76 participants, after 15 minutes of play. "The need to clean to keep intact the moral purity, the effect of Macbeth (Shakespeare establishing this association), is a psychological phenomenon in which a person attempts to purify themselves in order to deal with the feelings of moral distress," describes the researcher who led the study André Melzer. "We think the effect may result from Macbeth games violent video games, especially when it involved violence against humans," he adds. Melzer also notes that the experienced players seem to use different strategies to deal with the situation in the games.

Future studies aimed at bridging the moral psychology and the effects of media violence, will help reveal how long-term exposure to violence adversely affects the incidence of aggression.
