The Brazilian Psychiatric Association (BPA) and the Brazilian Association of Attention Deficit (Abda) positioned themselves to the campaign not unlike the Medicalization of Life, launched by the Federal Council of Psychology (CFP) last Wednesday (11). The campaign warns against the overuse of drugs psiquátricos in children and adolescents with learning difficulties.

"We are opposed because the campaign is a movement of people psychologizing. The CSC wants to create the need for everyone to be submitted to psychotherapy. Diagnosis of psychiatric disorders should be done by psychiatrists, not psychologists," said the president of the BPA Antonio Geraldo.

On Friday (13), BPA and Abda the company launched manifesto on the subject, which was supported by 29 organizations, critical statements against the use of drugs. In a statement, said that all available scientific articles indicate that drug treatment is the first choice for most patients.

According to the adviser to the CFP, Marilene Proenca, medicalization is all treatment processes or social and cultural behavior in children, adolescents or adults with signs of psychiatric illness.

According to psychiatrist Antonio Geraldo, however, the consumption of drugs against disorders such as dyslexia, attention deficit and hyperactivity is still short of the amount of carriers.

In the accounts of the President of the BPA, about 5% of the population are carriers of disorders related to attention and learning, which corresponds to approximately 10 million people - which would result in 10 million boxes of medicines per month for a each carrier. However, data indicate that the CFP were consumed in Brazil, on average, 2 million cases per month in 2011.

There should be research to identify the inappropriate use of medicines. If we had adequate protection to health in Brazil for those cases in which treatment should be multidisciplinary, combating misdiagnosis would be facilitated. The use of psychotropic drugs should be rational, for diagnostic means well done, using the International Classification of Diseases, said the president of the BPA.

For patients with Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD), the doctor Pablius Braga da Silva, 47 years, diagnosis of the disorder can not be ignored. He said he discovered the problem as an adult, the medication did absolutely all the difference.

Nobody deserves to get sick and stay suffering. Since everything is controlled and without risks, the medication must be used. If there are means of treatment before medication, okay. The risk is to use too. Should be given a vote of confidence to the diagnosis, said the carrier, which has a 6 year old daughter who also has ADHD.

According to psychologist and neuropsychologist Edyleine Benzik, creator of the Scale of Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity, used by teachers in schools, the hereditary factor is decisive for the development of this type of disorder. The absence of heredity, however, does not prevent the problem is afforded by other factors.

If the family is disorganized, does not work well, no time, this can trigger a disorder and stimulate a type of behavior. If the child has the tendency and the family provides, it acts as a trigger. The neurobiological problem is not just social or emotional, he said.

The psychologist explained that the treatment for these disorders is medication, associated monitoring in other areas.

Disorders of attention and learning are scientifically studied, are processes that have criteria for diagnosis. The banality of medicalization is because any staff believes that the more inattentive and hyperactive child has a disorder. We all have one or another symptom. But the diagnosis is made according to a set of symptoms which, when treated, bring significant benefits to the person's life and family, said Edyleine.

According to her, the onset of disorders of attention and learning occurs due to the lack of certain neurotransmitters which are not produced. Hence the working poor brain. The drug acts to restore the missing substances.

With medication, the brain has the right answer and it works as it should. The remedies are not addictive and, over time, the person will develop skills that had not. When patients choose to use the drug at some point in life, not by dependence but by conscience, the psychiatrist said.

According Edyleine Benzik, the patient can control the drug. A person who has bronchitis taking a drug when you know you have to do physical exercise. The same occurs in relation to them, they know they must reach a certain level of productivity at work or having to cope with any task, said Edyleine.
